Introducing Ella! Since we’re celebrating over July 4th weekend, and she is has just arrived in America (uh, and on earth), the theme is “little Lady Liberty” and the hors d’oeuvres are inspired by Ellis Island (hors d’oeuvres — a gift from France, just like the statue) — but also all represent New York. My friends Jill and Victoria came for the whole day from Philly and helped with the a la minute aspects and with Ella, and a small bunch of other friends joined for the festivities.
For Jewish immigrants, Pastrami Knishes
For German immigrants, fresh “Combos” or cheese-stuffed pretzel nobs
For Soviet immigrants, with an Asian twist, a kielbasa and cabbage eggroll with a borscht dipping sauce and sour cream
For Italian immigrants, meatballs served on fried spaghetti
And for dessert and for Irish immigrants, brownies infused with the flavors of Bailey’s and topped with oatmeal crunchies and Guinness caramel
Finally as a beverage, I used my soda stream to supply freshly made seltzer and egg creams (1/2 cup water, 2 TB homemade chocolate sauce — 10 oz bittersweet chocolate melted in 2 cups of water and chilled — and seltzer, stirred to foaming!)
