Asia Outside: Description

For a yearly themed family meal, we created an unusual challenge: My father had made a list of possible themes, including a variation on East meets West and “Inside Job,” meaning every food would have an unexpected filling. I combined his two requests to create a series of dishes, in which every item was to be disguised in Eastern clothing. That is, we took the idea of dim sum, but very liberally, including similarly small-portioned items from cultures throughout Asia, and made those foods the outsides (i.e., vietnamese summer rolls, empanadas for the Philippines, dim sum for China, sushi for Japan and samosas for India) but made the fillings of these delicious dim sum like items more typical of an American picnic or backyard barbecue.

Other than the baked buns, which I can never get quite right, this was a fun and tasty meal!
